Final Dress!

October 28th, 2011

Last night’s final dress rehearsal was all that and then some. The level of talent in this production is second to none. Prince Charming nails a high ‘cC not once, but twice, and then throws in a high ‘e’ just because he can.

Katherine Noone and Barbara Shram absolutely nail the role of the step sisters. They are both great comic actresses who turn the characters into more of the ‘bumbling, bewlidered’ stepsisters, confused as to why life is so unfair to them rather than ‘wicked’ step sisters. The performance these two deliver is worth the price of admission alone. These local divas demonstrate they have the chops to perform on any stage, anywhere, and hold their own and then some with the visiting artists with whom they share the stage.

Opening night Friday night. A very limited number of Section 1 seats remain, and there are still prime seats in Section 2 and more in section 3. Call 239-4558 and the FMO staff will help you find the best remaining seats.

Enjoy these photos.

Cinderella Photos!

October 26th, 2011

Here’s some photos from last night’s rehearsal of the first act of Rossini’s “Cinderella”. You know you have a beautiful cast when not one single picture was enhanced in any way.

Enjoy!

Stay tuned for photos from act 2.

Do something new

October 23rd, 2011

One of our sister companies, Opera Memphis is doing a market study. They are giving away a certain number of tickets to people who haven’t attended the opera before.

Here’s the caveat: they must agree to attend the three season performances and complete a survey after each performance.

FM Opera Company is producing Cinderella Friday evening October 28 and Sunday Afternoon October 30; Amahl and the Night Visitors (a wonderful Christmas story) the evening of Friday December 9 and Sunday Afternoon December 11; and Beethoven’s Fidelio Friday evening April 13 and Sunday Afternoon April 15.

To the first 6 people who are willing to complete this market survey, I will provide two section 1 (that’s the good seats) to each of these productions. You choose whichever performance fits your schedule; Friday night for one, Sunday afternoon for the other or any combination that works for you is fine. Just as long as you attend all three performances and complete a market survey.

Send your request to    manager@fmopera.org     I will let you know if you’ve responded in time.

Thanks for giving us a hand!

At a Theatre Near You!

October 5th, 2011

The past few weeks we’ve been working on a television commercial. We were so pleased with the product we decided to produce a version to run pre-show in local movie theatres. As always, Travis at Frame of Mind Video did a phenomenal job editing.  Take a moment and let us know what you think.

Prince Charming

September 27th, 2011

Being the marketing director of a performing arts organization is an odd combination of fun and intimidating. We’ve been investing alot of resources in understanding our core audience and our target audience and how to best connect with her.

In that regard, we are promoting “Cinderella” in a way I think has never really been done.

Prepare to see this on electronic billboards throughout Fargo Moorhead starting Monday.

Would you like fries with your aria?

September 23rd, 2011

We recently received a treasure trove of marketing data from Odile Streed, Professor of Business at Concordia College in Moorhead.

She spent the past several months completing market analysis as well as meeting with focus groups to help understand our core audience, as well as identify opportunities we have to connect with a larger audience base.

One of the learnings that reinforced something we’d always suspected . . . . people would like to have some refreshments during the intermission.

So . . . today I connected with Dining Services at NDSU to inquire as to options for making this happen.

Ideally, we will have refreshments ready for pre-order and payment when you arrive, that will be ready for pick-up at intermission so you can enjoy while discussing with your friends the fabulous first act you’ve just experienced.

As always, I’m looking for market feedback. Please feel free to comment on this page, or drop me a note at manager@fmopera.org.

(watch the electronic billboards around town starting Monday October 3rd. you’ll be impressed)

That’s a wrap

September 22nd, 2011

The past week we’ve been sharing some photos and stories from our television ad production.

We started with an idea, loosely based on a very common television commercial storyline . . . some poor soul is suffering in a big way, and by taking advantage of our product, his life will suddenly and exponentially become better.

Day one filmed at the home of ‘creepy doctor’ and ‘mac’ the neglected dog.  The flame in the frypan was created by lighting vodka with a long-handled lighter. The exaggerated chef’s hat is made of an old sheet, and Mac the neglected dog is naturally that affectionate. “Creepy Doctor” is actually not creepy at all, and usually makes one wise-crack after another.

“Beautiful Woman” aka Lucy Thrasher instantly knew which shoes she’d wear when we asked her to be in a commercial for “Cinderella”  her bejeweled Stuart Weismans look perfect. The sassy black satin Helmut Lang cocktail dress worked pretty well, too.

The team at Sarello’s were more than accommodating. Tony and Sarah have been huge opera supporters over the years, and our success in reaching new levels of production excellence and community involvement would not have happened without their creative and enthusiastic support.

And Travis at Frame of Mind Video was better than great. He put together a rough draft, we gave feedback and he tweaked, and with only one edit we had our final product.

Look for a longer version to be showing at Fargo Theatre pre-shows starting week 2 of October.

Take a look. I think you’ll be pleased.

FM Opera TV Ad

TV ad, day 2, take 14

September 18th, 2011

Day 2 went much more smoothly working with an additional professional, Lucy Thrasher. For those of you who haven’t met Lucy, she’s a reigning Soprano Diva in the upper midwest and has appeared in FMO productions countless times. (You’ll see Lucy in this spring’s production of Fidelio.)

Lucy combined with Frame of Mind Video owner Travis Jensen made for a video shoot that went quickly and seemingly effortlessly.

There is a reason I say seemingly effortlessly. Generally I’m known as a fairly creative type. I can visualize things and have them turn out like they’re supposed to. My only problem with public speaking is that I do it too much and with inappropriate social filters.

Suddenly I’m like a cardboard cut-out. Lucy’s movement was fluid. My movement was like a newborn calf trying to stand up.

Lucy’s facial expression was compelling and authentic. My facial expression was that of a terrified seventh grader.

Lucy’s walk was that of a catwalk model. My walk was that of a field sobriety test.

Lucy’s smile lit up the room. My smile looked that of a kid who just got busted with his hand in the cookie jar.

You get the idea.

Monday is voice-over recording and final edit. Look for the ad to appear on local tv stations as well as pre-show trailer at The Fargo Theatre beginning in early October.

Day One, Take One

September 15th, 2011

It’s been a long time since I’ve been a part of a television commercial. It’s been even longer since I’ve been a part of producing one.

“Mac” the West Highland Terrier, in his commercial debut as “Ignored Pet”

The storyline: A guy is despondent, but doesn’t quite know what’s wrong. All the things in life he enjoyed: plants, cooking, his dog, just didn’t interest him any longer.

Despondent Guy decides to visit Creepy Doctor and receives a diagnosis of:

O.D.D.

Stay tuned for what the Doctor prescribes to cure O.D.D. I bet you can’t guess what that might be?

FMO ad, take 32

September 15th, 2011

So, has anyone here ever produced a television ad? How about written, directed, produced and played a role in one?

One of the many great things about being a part of a performing arts organization is that we spend time with some pretty serious talent here in our community.  So, with just a few e-mails flying around the past few days, we’ve been able to assemble:

Lucy Thrasher–in the role of “Beautiful Woman”

Weyburn Wasson–in the role of “Creepy Doctor”

David Hamilton–in the role of voice-over narrator

“Mac” the West Highland Terrier–in the role of “Neglected Pet”

And me, Bernie Erickson–in the role of ODD sufferer whose life is dramatically transformed after his ODD is cured with recommended treatment by “Creepy Doctor”.

Did you know one in three people in the midwest suffers from ODD? Opera Deficiency Disorder? It wreaks havoc on ordinary lives but is fully curable, simply by attending one of the amazing Fargo Moorhead Opera productions available right here!

Keep an eye on our blog page for photos from tomorrow’s filming of scene one.
